Like the design process itself, my path to architecture was anything but linear. Through my childhood in the Finger Lakes of New York and my undergraduate studies at Middlebury College, my interests have been all over the map--science, literature, philosophy, music, art, you name it—and my lifelong hobbies include reading novels and textbooks, playing the piano, playing sports, wandering around new places, and making things with my hands.
After graduating from Middlebury with a major in physics and a minor in Chinese, I moved to Ningbo, China and started an education business. After three years, I returned to the United States and worked as an economic consultant in New York City.
Over that time, I came to realize that I wanted a career that was about more than just business. I needed something that accommodated not only my analytical aptitude but also my creative and humanistic impulses. The answer was right in front of my nose, something I was constantly noticing and thinking about despite having no formal training: architecture.
I received my M.Arch from Cornell University, interning over the summers at DWA. After graduation, I moved to Burlington with my wife, a public defender, and began working at DWA full-time.
