From 2009-2012 Arthur lived on Christmas Island, a remote island in the Indian Ocean North of Australia. Being the only designer in a small community gave him the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects. He was involved with everything from small design-build fit-ups, to the planning of a permaculture farm and community center. Sustainability and energy efficiency has always been a priority and a source of inspiration, but living on the closed ecosystem of an island gave him an eye opening insight to the potentially devastating affect that humans can have on the environment.
Arthur moved back to Vermont and joined DWA in 2014, where he continued to strive professionally to improve the built environment, focusing on energy efficiency and low impact materials and construction. He became a Certified Passive House Designer, joined the Northern Vermont Building Science Group, and the Burlington 2030 District Board.
In 2020 Arthur put his knowledge to the test when he designed and built his own house, which was the only Certified Passive House in Burlington. This three story urban-infill townhouse was net-zero operational energy, and was built foam-free with a focus on using carbon storing materials.
At Duncan Wisniewski Architecture Arthur has taken on the role of Sustainability Coordinator where he explores ways to lower the impact of our buildings on the environment by lowering both the operational and construction carbon footprint, reducing toxic materials, and improving the durability of our built environment.
